Album Review: XIXA – ‘Shift and Shadow’

XIXA
Shift and Shadow
(Barbes)

A Tucson duo with strong ties to some of the greatest bands of this generation (Calexico, Giant Sand), Gabe Sullivan and Brian Lopez took cues from their success playing Chicha songs (Peruvian music) on stage to fleshing out an EP where their Latino heritage comes through via Amazonian sounds and Afro-Latin rhythms amid the sounds of rock, punk and the synth work of their past. It’s dark, psychedelic, and full of dense guitar work hat illustrates an unusual and interesting mix of rock music and South American influences. You’ve probably never heard anything quite like this, but will definitely want to hear more immediately.
